MALAYSIA • Political Will • National Tiger Conservation Action Plan (NTCAP) accepted at National Biodiversity Council chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia • Tx2 of tiger population in Malaysia announced by DPM on 4th Nov 2009 • developed through consultation; federal government; state governments and NGOs through Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) • Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Malaysia appointed as secretariat implementation of NTCAP • Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) main implementation agency

Good Practices – Smart Green Infrastructure • Central Forest Spine (CFS) master plan developed to create corridors linking fragmented habitats through smart green infrastructure • 32 linkages identified as primary and secondary links • The implementation of the NTCAP will a be strategy to implement the linkages • A pilot linkage project being implemented at the north-eastern part of Taman Negara National Park with 3 wildlife viaducts • The Malaysian government spent US$10 million to develop this corridor • Indicators: corridor 15,000 ha designated; wildlife movement; habitat enriched

Good practices to scale up: Three priority Actions • Enhanced patrolling of Taman Negara National Park • a source tiger habitat (434,000ha) • Formation of mobile patrol unit to curb poaching of wildlife and tigers at Belum State Park at the Malaysia-Thailand borders • Capacity building for tiger conservation through the Institute of Biodiversity (IBD; DWNP)

Way forward • Have national consultation meeting to enhance the implementation of NTCAP • Speed up the formation of the secretariat under NRE to coordinate the implementation of the NTCAP • Some external funding to implement the NTCAP; especially the priority actions • Funding to have a national consultation meeting
