  2. Procedure • Verify appropriateness of compound • Dose check, drug interactions • Is it commercially available? • Is there a formula available? • Is the BUD acceptable for therapy?

  3. Procedure • Calculate amount needed to make • May need to account for loss • Prepare compound using appropriate techniques and equipment • Dispense compounds in container • Bottle, jar, syringe, etc. • Attach label with important auxiliary labels • Record procedure for future preparations

  4. Auxiliary Labels • Shake well • Refrigerate • Protect from light • Do not refrigerate • External use only • Discard after __________ • “This prescription was compounded by ____”

  5. Patient Counseling Points • Counseling of compound should include: • Storage requirements • Patient education for active ingredients in compound • Emphasis on other special instructions • Shake well • Refrigerate • Expiration date

  6. PPC Day • Will cover: • Compounding law • Pharmacy calculations • Special populations • Dosage forms • Compounding techniques

  7. PPC Day • Wear clothing appropriate for work setting • Wear white coat • Name tags • Completed lab worksheets (2) • Calculator

  8. Safety Concerns with Compounding • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) • Read labels • Safety equipment • Protective eyewear/masks –optional • Gloves • Wash hands before leaving work area • Closed toe shoes • Head and facial hair out of the way (tied up)

  9. Safety Concerns • Disposal of chemicals • In labeled waste baskets • May not be removed from PPC • No eating or drinking in work area • Let staff/faculty know if there are allergy concerns with preparations
