  1. Activator, DBQ pre-write • In theory, how did the Roosevelt administration respond to the Great Depression? How was this theory of government intervention different from FDR’s Republican predecessors? (Hint: Did FDR increase or decrease the scope of the federal government?) • Specifically, which programs and policies did Roosevelt enact in order to address the problems associated with the Great Depression? (come up with at least one program for each of the three R’s). • In general, were these programs effective? • In practice, to what extent did these programs actually change the role of the federal government?

  2. What role should the government play in social welfare? 7.11 FDR’s New Deal

  3. Which economic strategy was FDR advocating for? • Who supported the “revolution of radicalism”? • Who supported the “revolution of conservativism?”

  4. Economic Theory • Evaluate: Which economic theory do you believe was best for addressing the problems of the Great Depression?

  5. DBQ • Analyze the responses of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration to the problems of the Great Depression. How effective were these responses? How did they change the role of federal government?

  6. Documents • Claim. Write a claim that directly addresses the prompt. • Evidence. Remember to use the documents as a guide to showcase your understanding of the historical context. • Analysis. Remember to show if and how each document proves your claim. Push analysis by answering, “so what? Why is this historically significant? How does this directly answer the prompt and answer the historical question?”

  7. Processing • Complete on a quarter-sheet of paper that you will pass in for credit. • Analyze the responses of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration to the problems of the Great Depression. How effective were these responses? How did they change the role of federal government?

  8. Assignment: Fireside Chat • Read and annotate the four Fireside Chats to get a sense for FDR’s program and his language and rhetoric. • Choose a political/economic theory that you think is best for addressing the specific problems of the Great Depression. • Deliver a 3-5 minute fireside chat that outlines your economic program. Remember to outline one program per specific program. Remember also to consider language, rhetoric, tone and intonation. Be persuasive!
