  1. What is motion? • When an object’s distance changes relative to a reference point.

  2. What is a reference point? • An object used for comparison to see if something is in motion!

  3. What is the formula for speed? SPEED = DISTANCE TIME

  4. DISTANCE mm, cm, m TIME sec, min, hours SPEED m/sec, km/hr

  5. Ms. Porter walks with a speed of 5 m/min. How long will it take her to walk 7 m? S= d / t therefore t = d / s t = 7 / 5 t = 1.4 min

  6. A horse runs across a field. Find the horse’s constant speed if he runs 21m in 7 seconds. S = d/t S = 21m/7sec S=3m/sec

  7. Calculate the speed of a car that travels 50km in 2 hours S=d/t S=50/2 S=25km/hr

  8. Calculate the speed of a baseball that travels 36m in 3 seconds S=d/t S=36/3 S=12m/sec

  9. A cyclist travels 32 km during the first two hours of riding and 13 km during the next hour. Calculate the average speed. Average speed = total distance / total time Average speed = 32 + 13 / 2 + 1 Average speed = 45 / 3 Average speed = 15 km / hr

  10. If a car travels 85 km/hr, how much distance will the car cover in 3 hours. S = d / t therefore d = (s)(t) d = (85)(3) d = 255 km

  11. WHAT IS VELOCITY? • SPEED IN A GIVEN DIRECTION!

  12. The Atlanta Falcons are traveling to Miami to play the Dolphins. The team bus travels at 90km/hr. What is the velocity of the bus. 90km/hr southwest

  13. 3456 mm = ? m 3.456 m

  14. WHAT IS ACCELERATION • When an object does ANY of the following, it is called acceleration… • Speeds up • Slows Down (deceleration) • Changes Direction

  15. A roller coaster car picks up speed as it rolls downhill. When it starts the car’s speed is 4m/sec, but 3 seconds later it’s speed is 22 m/sec. What is the acceleration? a = Fv – Iv / time a = 22 – 4 / 3 a = 18 / 3 a= 6 m/sec2

  16. A car ad states that a certain car can accelerate from 0-90km/hr in 11 seconds. What is the acceleration? a = Fv – Iv / t a = 90 – 0 /11 a = 90 / 11 a = 8.18 km/hr/sec

  17. A student runs down the hall at 1.2m/sec. After 3.2 sec he is moving 3.6 m/sec. What is the student’s acceleration? a = Fv – Iv/ time a = 3.6 – 1.2 / 3.2 a = 2.4 / 3.2 a = 0.75 m/sec2

  18. Christina is running to catch the bus at an impressive 18 m/sec. She realizes she can’t make the bus and she slows down and stops in 4.5sec a = Fv – Iv/ time a= 0 – 18 / 4.5 a = -18/4.5 a = - 4 m/sec2

  19. How much time does it take a bird flying at a speed of 45 km /hr to travel 1,800km? s = d / t therefore t = d / s t= 1800 / 45 t = 40 hours

  20. If Bert the bat travels eastward at 40 km/hr with a tailwind of 6 km/hr, what is his actual speed? 46 km/hr

  21. Convert 1 km/hr to m/min 1 km x 1000 m = 1000 m hour 1 km hour 1000m = 1 hour = 1000m = 16.67 m/min hour 60 min 60min
