The French Lose • After eight years of fighting, the Vietnamese forces defeat the French at Dien Bien Phu • President Eisenhower, concerned by the communist victory, saw this as a threat to the whole of Asia. • The Domino Theory was proposed by the President. • After the war, in the North-Communist • In the South-Pro American and French government
The Two Vietnams • The South was governed my a military dictator • Opposition movements led by Vietcong( guerilla fighters) • The Vietcong gained support of the people • Civil war throughout the country was happening everywhere, the South Vietnamese President Ngo Dihn Diem was assassinated. • The US saw the potential of a Southern defeat and escalated their involvement
President Johnson • President Johnson decides to send nearly 200000 more soldiers to Vietnam in 1964 • The US faced TWO major challenges • The landscape and the Southern government that they were defending was INCREDIBLY unpopular • The Soviet Union backed the North • Unable to win a decisive ground victory, the USA turned to Airpower. • This would lead to the people of Vietnam hating the United States
