  • Different methods
  • Ethnographic
  • PRA/RRA (rapid Rural Appraisal)-> People first approach. (Combines several tools designed to collect behaviour, practice, thinking etc)
  • Actor-oriented approach – reflective process- problem solving through community participation (Knowledge gained through action for action) – many methodologies:
  • 1. Action Research (PAR- participatory action research- Freire) – Phenomenology and post modernism

KAP/KAPB studies

  • FGD
  • Case studies
  • Assessment- cognitive based- School, Classroom, Literacy
  • Quantitative: (that measure behaviour/practice)
  • SES (socio-economic survey) (World Bank/UNDP SES)-> (structure: HHD characteristics, Demography, Income expenditure, main theme of research, education, time-use, KAP, Coding list)
  • Demographic surveys (DHS)
  • Behavioural surveillance Survey BSS(used in HIV/AIDS research, track behaviour in high risk groups)

Where is the link?
  • Can be combined with other quantitative data
  • These methods are more effective on smaller focused area and defined geographical region
  • Some are used as one of the tools in many assessment studies (including Literacy Assessment)
  • Many used for project evaluation (KAP), project monitoring (Action research), project planning (RRA/PRA)
  • Effective in studying specific issues, problems highlighted in our regular data collection.
  • Again need training in design, collection and analysis of these methods!
