  4. But Ms. Phillips! What does this have to do with poetry?

  5. Poems have patterns! The following pattern has an ABCB pattern. Roses are red, Violets are blue. Candy is sweet. And so are you! Can you spot the words that rhyme? Why do we identify this poem as having an ABCB pattern?

  6. Try this one on your own: There once was a girl named Mary, Who thought she’d made friends with a fairy. But then she found out That without a doubt The fairy was actually scary! ___ ____ ____ ____ ____ This poem can also be classified as a limerick because it fits this pattern!

  7. Not all poems have patterns Like this one! School keeps me busy Learning and questioning. Like trees outside I grow with the days. Books full of words, Pages full of writing, Punctuation. The weekend comes. Free at last. Homework is done, Mom tells us to play. The trees whisper With the wind That it’s almost time to grow again.

  8. How about these patterns? Can you identify them? Hickory, dickory, dock. The mouse ran up the clock. The clock struck one And down she run. Hickory, dickory, dock. Hey diddle diddle,The cat and the fiddle,The cow jumped over the moon,The little dog laughed to see such sport,And the fork ran away with the spoon.

  9. Identifying poems: Acrostic Poem: While children play Ice falls from the roof. Nothing keeps them from their fun Till mama calls them for hot cocoa. Each slurps up the very last drop before Returning to their snowman in the front yard.
