  1. Principles and Practices Universal design for learning

  2. Principles of the UDL Framework • Principle 1: To support recognition learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of presentation • Principle 2: To support strategic learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of expression and apprenticeship. • Principle 3: To support affective learning, provide multiple, flexible options for engagement. • Taken from the CAST website: http://www.cast.org/teachingeverystudent/ideas/tes/chapter4_3.cfm

  3. Every Brain Works Differently… UDL examines the “what,” “how,” and “why,” of learning. We have recognition networks (which deal with how we present information), strategic networks (how we differentiate ways students can demonstrate what they know), and affective networks (which involve student engagement and motivation).

  4. Creative expression

  5. Collaboration

  6. Expressing understanding and student engagement

  7. Thinking like historians…

  8. Incorporating UDL • Use technology • Use varied formats to deliver information • Use varied instructional practices • Use varied types of assessments • Consider the multiple intelligences of your students as you plan lessons • Anticipate barriers and always keep the learning goals the focus
