IB Requirements General Regulations of the Diploma Programme • 6 subjects + core • English Literature HL • History of the Americas HL • Biology OR Chemistry HL • Mathematics SL OR Mathematical Studies SL • Spanish, French, OR German SL • Dance, Music, OR Film SL • CAS • TOK • EE • nitty gritty requirements • Scores released on July 5 to schools, July 6 to candidates • Highest score per subject is a 7 • TOK and EE are scored A-E • IA = Internal Assessment, is scored by our teachers, moderated by IB Examiners • EA = External Assessment, includes exams, papers, projects, portfolios, etc., that are scored only by IB Examiners • Each subject score is a composite of IA and EA scores (percentages differ by subject) • See deadline sheet

AL/MCPSS/DHS Requirements Advanced with Honors Diploma • 30 Credits • 3.5 weighted GPA by the end of 1st semester • 4 English (honors, AP, or IB) • 4 Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig, Precal) • 4 Science (honors, AP, IB) Must take physics • 4 Social Studies (honors, AP, IB) • ½ fine art, ½ health, ½ computer app, 1 PE • 2 years of same foreign language Career Portfolio • all seniors must complete the career portfolio on al.kuder.com by Dec. 4, 2015 activation code: N3849334TSN • Recognition at Graduation • Students who sit on stage:3.75 cumulative weighted GPA by the end of 1st semester of the senior year. (7 semesters total) • International Baccalaureate students: IB Stole with Emblem • National Honor Society: Gold and White Tassel • EPIC Majors: Black and White Cord • Valedictorian and Salutatorian: Black and Gold Stole

  5. Let’s Go To College! Where are you and your senior right now? • Have you discussed who’s doing the application legwork? • Have you visited some schools? • Have you discussed the characteristics you’ll be looking for in a college (other than FREE  )? • Have you discussed the resources you do/you will have for financing college (it’s rarely FREE  )?

  6. Let’s Go To College! Between now and October 31 • Nail down a list of at least 5 schools to which you’ll apply and CONTACT THEM • Make a list of, or put on a calendar, the deadlines for applications • Watch out for earlier deadlines for scholarships and honors colleges/programs! • There are different application deadline options - lingo • Save up some application $$$ • e.g., Auburn’s fee is usually $50 • Do you qualify for a waiver? • Update your resume and print a few copies • Begin working on the Common App and other application essays • Become familiar with US News & World Report • October 24th ACT has a registration deadline of September 18 (late: Oct 2)

Between November 1 and mid-March • Apply! • Visit schools that made the cut • You can ask to meet with financial aid representatives/counselors • Get recommendations • Whose writing these? • Make it easy for the person writing it • Know what the rec is for • FAFSA • The forms are usually available January 1 • Visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa#when-fafsato find out moreand use the forecaster tool • Some schools may require a CSS Profile; go here to find out more: https://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile • You will have to complete this every year of school

  8. Learn the Lingo! Terms you should know: • Need Blind v. Need Aware • FAFSA v. CSS (EFC) • Loans v. Grants v. Scholarships • Merit-based v. Need-based • Early Decision, Early Action, Regular, Rolling, Single Choice Early Action, Restrictive Early Action Characteristics of College/Universities you should understand: • College v. University • Public v. Private • Liberal Arts • Institute of Technology • Selective

  9. Your resume! • No prescribed format for applications but here is a good template (sometimes you will enter info online) • What are “they” really looking for when they read your resume? • What can you do now to improve your resume? • Volunteer • Intern • Work • Read • Learn

  10. Between March and May • Acceptance/rejection letters will come in • Complete and submit FAFSA • Visit schools you are still considering • At the very least, contact them upon being accepted to ask about the “bottom line” • Decline schools by their deadline
