rut strategies
Rut Strategies
  • There are three basic steps to the rut, and each step has its own strategy and hunting techniques.
  • The strategies you adopt will depend upon many situations and conditions.
the pre rut
The Pre-Rut
  • The pre-rut usually occurs before the legal hunting season.
  • The buck is usually spending his time in his sanctuary.
  • A good time to catch a buck at his bed is during the middle of the day.
  • The best time to see a buck moving around is during the morning or sunset.
  • The bucks start paying less attention to their surroundings.
  • They start to begin following does.
the rut
The Rut
  • First signs of the rutting occur around the bedding area.
  • Scrapes are generally an indicator that a buck is in the area.
  • Look for the bucks getaway trail, never hunt directly above the scrapes
  • Cover scents help if you are downwind
  • Bucks will travel off of their trails if they suspect danger in the area.
the post rut
The Post-Rut
  • Some buck become nocturnal due to intense hunting pressure.
  • Bucks will probably not be moving during the day.
  • Bucks will bead down in thick vegetation.
  • Try to find many trails used by the buck, then narrow down the trails the he will probably take when he is running away.
  • Position yourself to make a shot and make it count because you will probably not have much time to shoot.
summary
Summary
  • Understanding the rut is crucial to harvesting a trophy buck.
  • Each stage has its own hunting techniques.
  • Learn these techniques and match them up with exactly what is going on during that stage of the rut.
  • Good luck, and have a good hunt.
