  1. Assistive Technology ED 505 Taylor Barrentine

  2. AT Defined • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA ’04) defines an assistive technology device as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child and specifically excludes a medical device that is surgically implanted or the replacement of such device” (e.g., a cochlear implant).

  3. Laws Regarding Assistive Technology • In the state of Alabama, STAR, Alabama’s Assistive Technology Act program, is administered through the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services and is federally funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) under the Assistive Technology Act of 1998, as amended in 2004 (P.L. 108-364).

  4. Continued… • Since its inception in 1994, STAR has been and continues to be a resource to provide Alabamians free access to information, referral services, educational programs, and publications in accessible format on extensive topics related to disability rights, laws/policies, and funding opportunities for assistive technology.  • STAR has a 16-year history of established relationships and partnerships with public and private entities within the state to address AT-related issues and ensure statewide coverage.  STAR staff participate on boards, advisory councils, workgroups, committees, etc., that address the needs of Alabamians with disabilities across a life span to increase the availability of assistive technology for the consumers they serve.

  5. STAR’S MISSION • To enable Alabamians children and adults with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential at school, home, work and play through improved access to and acquisition of assistive technology devices and services via a variety of statewide activities.

  6. Hearing Impaired • The hearing aid is probably the simplest and most common assistive listening device that can be placed on the ear of the hearing-impaired students. The typical hearing aid, which is shaped to comfortably fit the ear, is an electronic device with three parts: microphone, amplifier, and receiver. The capacity of the hearing aid can be augmented by a personal FM unit. The downside of the personal FM unit is that it drowns out the noise of other students, which may lead to difficulty in social interactions among students.

  7. Seeing Impaired • For individuals with a vision handicap, Assistive Technology Devices couldinclude magnifiers, speech output devices, larger printed screens, braille, and closed circuit television.

  8. Learning Disabled • For students who struggle with writing, an abbreviation expander is an excellent assistive technology tool. It is used with word processing, these software programs allow a user to create, store, and re-use abbreviations for frequently-used words or phrases. This can save the user keystrokes and ensure proper spelling of words and phrases he has coded as abbreviations.

  9. Physically Disabled • Wheel chairs are often used for students who suffer from a physical disability. For students who are semi-independent, an electric wheelchair that is controlled by a joy stick is often used.
