Sports Michael Jordan: • Played for the Chicago Bulls and led them to six NBA titles. • Compared to celebrated and legendary basketball players such as Elgin Baylor, Connie Hawkins, and Julius Erving. The comparisons proved prophetic, for Jordan dominated professional basketball—offensively, defensively, and aesthetically. • Scored over three thousand points Earvin “Magic” Johnson: • Played for Los Angeles Lakers and led them to five NBA titles. • Johnson was also known for his rivalry with the Boston Celtics whom featured a NBA legend Larry Bird. These two NBA superstars created the “golden era” of the NBA during the 1980s.

Led the 49ers to four Super Bowl titles (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990). • Only player to be awarded championship game's MVP three times. • 83 to 122 passes fro 1,142 yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. Mike Tyson: • Is the youngest heavyweight champion in history, 1986. • Although a skilled defensive boxer, Tyson was mainly known for his powerful punching ability, his gladiator like demeanor, and his well-deserved aura of invincibility.

Changing Roles of Individuals and Families • During the 1980s young hard working, aspiring minded city career people were known as yuppies, Young Urban Professionals. • Child abuse became a powerful social issue in the 1980s, generating intense media attention, heightened public concern, congressional hearings, numerous books and articles, and increased work-loads for child-protective-service (CPS) agencies • In spite of all the luxuries during the 1980s not everyone was able to enjoy the luxuries. The homeless crisis was one of the leading social problems in the 80s. • Known as street people, they were frequently seen around New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washing D.C.

  9. NATURAL DISASTERS • St. Helen erupted on May 18th , 1980 killing 57 people and injuring hundreds. • Hurricane Allen killed over 153 people and destroyed several homes. • Tiananmen Square Massacre was a series of non-violent protest held in 1989 in Beijing, China.
