  1. WP1.2.3 Progress John Conway Bonn, Sept 20th, 2007

  2. Overview • 1 iBoB and 1 iADC ordered, arrival mid-October?? • Jodrell-Metsahovi to do digital electronics firmware – Onsala to provision link for 4Gbps test to eMERLIN, main deliverable fringes • Have decided to do fringe test at 1.3cm using Onsala 20m • Present recent discussions-progress on link issue • Also will employ 1 man-year from Nov/Dec, soon to advertise

  3. Discussions with SUNET/NORDUnet • Held a meeting at Arlanda airport, Stockholm, June 12th, myself, SUNET and NORDUnet heads, + Richard Hughes-Jones from Manchester • Very successful. SUNET wants users for lightpaths on its newly installed 40G hybrid network. • Offered to install equipment free of charge at Onsala and Chalmers to light a lightpath on our dark fibre, to enable Onsala-Stockholm 10G lightpath • No need to pay SUNET while in test phase in 2008, would have to pay if used operationally (e.g LOFAR, eMERLIN). Likewise NORDUnet to arrange test time (few days per month) to UK. • 10G equipment to be installed at Onsala and Chalmers on Tuesday 6th November

  4. NORDUnet Proposal • Objective is to build a network based on user controled point to point (PtP) connections between Onsala and Metsahovi and correlators at Dwingeloo, Manchester,Groningen. • Initial required bandwidth 4 Gbps • Client line interface 10 GE Lan/Phy • National Connectivity • SUNET • Funet • SURFnet • Ukerna • Cross boarder Connectivity • SURFnet • NORDUnet • Will be a User Controled Light Path (UCLP) network

  5. PROPOSED - General Topology

  6. Expected Ready For Service Date – November 2007? • NORDUnet questions • How will Janet deliver the interconnection between Jodrell Bank and NORDUnet Co-Hosted at LINX • Will SURFnet deliver the interconnection between Dwingloo and SURFnet • Will SURFnet deliver the interconnection between Groningen and SURFnet • Who will delivere the interconnection between Metsahov and NORDUnet (FUnet) • Client Interface types – NORDUnet presuemes it is 10 GE LAN/PHY • Will each Radio Telescope/NREN be a pure Layer 2 or will it requieres routing • Plan next meeting Oct 31st Copenhagen, invite UK, Dutch NRENs.

  7. Chalmers Multi mode digital 20m Analog over fibre Single mode digital 10G lightpath 1G General traffic 1G switched VLBI Coax iADC VLBI’ Mk5 New Offices iBoB 25m CX4 Ciena Switch LR-10G LR-10G? CX4? LOFAR PC+10G card Onsala Local Network plan November 2007 General Obs traffic

  8. Test schedule/Timeline • Envision PC to PC, iBob to PC, iBOB to iBOB tests. • Done either of Onsala-Metsahovi or Onsala-Jodrell Bank routes • Final timeframe for fringes depends on delivery of eMERLIN correlator • Also investigate fringes to LOFAR (using our present 4 LBA setup, or full LOFAR station if funded in 2008 (will know end of November)
