  2. New Boss • 1881 only 230km of track had been built • They would never reach BC in time • CPR Syndicate hired William Van Horne as the new CPR manager

  3. Van Horne • Smart • Hard working • Efficient

  4. Success • 800km build the first year • 800km build the following year • Looked like Van Horne would enable the Canadian Government to make it to BC in time

  5. Crisis • Van Horne was building the railway so fast they ran out of money • Couldn’t pay the workers • Workers went on strike • Macdonald reluctantly passed a bill giving 23 million more to the railway

  6. Cutting Corners • In order to save money Van Horne did what he could • Built bridges out of temporary wooden trestles
