  4. Principal Investigator • Full responsibility for conduct of the Project • Full responsibility for the results achieved • Assure adherence to performance goals • Assure adherence to time schedules • Assure adherence to other project requirements • Assure adherence to terms of the grant

  5. Timeline • Review • Identify Key Activities • Adjust based on Award Conditions • Reporting for Annual Increments - At least 90 days prior to the end of each 12 month period - Failure to submit timely reports may delay processing of funding increments

Short Term Absences PI/PD or Co-PI/PD Temporary absence up to three months • Notify grantee organization • Then notify NSF Program Officer of project management arrangements Longer than three months (w/ intent to return) • Project management arrangements to NSF for approval • At least 30 days before departure • Possibility of grant termination if not satisfactory

  8. Grantee-Approved No-Cost Extension • One time extension of the expiration date • Up to 12 months • Adequate Completion of Scope of Work • No additional funds • Merely to exhaust remaining balance not allowed • Submit notification on FastLane • At least 10 days prior to expiration date

  9. Requests for Approval(Exhibit II-1) Post-award non-financial actions requiring prior approval from NSF and which can be submitted via FastLane? Prior written authorization from NSF is required for the following: 1. Transfer of the project effort; 2. Change in objectives or scope; 3. Change in PI or co-PI; 4. A substantial change in PI effort; Requires Program Officer and Grants Officer Approval

Two Ways to Achieve Sustainability • Institutionalization – Obtaining support and commitment from your institution to continue some or all of the grant after the project ends • External Support – Obtaining support from outside the institution to continue some or all of the project activities Source: Lawrenz &Keiser

Sustainability Mechanisms • Retaining project activities but decreasing work scopes • Continuing a subset of a project’s activities • Changing activities slightly to fit existing priorities • Obtaining other grants • Obtaining financial or other support from collaborators • Continuation or use of project’s activities/products at different institutions

  18. Evaluate Quality of Collaborations • Do you have a long-term vision and goals for the project and its partners? • Do you have written commitments describing the financial and intellectual contributions of and timelines for your collaborations?

  19. Ensuring Sustainability • Do you have a  written plan for incorporating the project within the institution (including dates and administrator written commitments)? • Do you have strategies to obtain additional funding and support for the project beyond the time of the original grant?

  20. Sustainability Dovetails w/ Dissemination • Do you have a project promotion and marketing plan for raising awareness of the project and updating and disseminating its products?
