Enhancing MRSEC Webmasters Meeting Agenda - Feb 2011

Agenda • Introductions • Webmasters' mailing list/user group (creating space for mrsecwebmasters’ to exchange knowledge ) http://lists.mrsec.org/listinfo.cgi/mrsec-webmasters-mrsec.org • Overview of web technologies and how they are used in Research  and Outreach • Overview of mrsec.org back end features  • Special feature - using Drupal bibio module for publications management • Questions and Answers.

  3. Overview of web technologies • CMS / Blogs / Wikis • Social networks / bookmarks • Polls, webforms, etc • Online Libraries • Online video (courses, etc.) • Skype, google voice, etc. – Collaboration • Instant messaging (IM) • Feeds (exchange of info between websites)

Overview of mrsec.org back end features  • Drupal-based – extendable CMS • Rich set of permissions • Variety of content types • Views for easy compilation of index pages • New features can be easily added (polls, webforms, maps, etc.) – more, more, more!! • Analysis tools can be configured for web view and export to other tools via .csv format

  7. On the boards – mrsec.org • Visual Redesign (Front page with Slideshow, navigation improvement, etc) • Optimization of all content types (highlights, education programs, centers) • Teaching modules • Web to print options • Print view optimization • Search – add google search, advanced search

Summary of the meeting • WebEx requires more prep work to eliminate echo effects (alternative technologies - My Instant Meeting, Dim Dim(sold to SalesForce), GoMeeting, EVO and Adobe Acrobat 9 PRO teleconferencing, https://www.yugma.com/share_skype.php • Permissions for web forms and biblio has to be checked, more info will be sent out • MRSEC.org admin haa some admin permissions that MRSEC webmasters do not, for example, Taxonomy editing • Anything that makes the annual reports less painful is useful - please provide your requests, recommendations, we can convey to NSF Directors • Most groups are maintaining two sites, their own site and their entries on official MRSEC site – how to optimize
