  1. Water Quality A short mastery check will follow this presentation Russell & Armstrong

  2. Warm-up – Pass the Question • Use the paper on the desk to list one item that defines water quality. • Pass the paper to a neighbor. • Add something new to the paper you receive. • Keep passing the paper and adding more information • Save the paper for later

  3. Reading Rubric Review • Water Pollution

  4. List the types of pollutants and how they enter the water system. • Toxic chemicals, human and animal wastes, and fertilizers and pesticides. Run off the land and into rivers, lakes, and ocean.

  5. List several types of point-source pollution. • Oil spilling from a supertanker, drainpipe spilling waste, leading underground tanks

  6. List several types of non-point-source pollution. • Fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste from farms, sand, grit, oil, and gasoline from city and suburban streets.

  7. How do excess nutrients get into the water system? • Runoff carries fertilizer, animal, and human waste into the water supply

  8. What two ways do Algal Bloom harm water systems? • Algal Blooms cause the water to become cloudy. They block light from reaching plants father down in the water. • They can also give off substances that can harm other organisms.

  9. How do low levels of oxygen in the water occur and what is the result? • Excess nutrients cause algae and other aquatic plants to grow in large numbers. • They run out of resources and die. • Decomposers break down the remains using up all the oxygen resulting in the death of fish and other animals.

  10. How can homeowners help with local water issues? • Reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides on lawns. Sweep up sand and sediment from the streets and sidewalks. • Make sure wastewater pipes do not empty directly into a lake or stream. • Keep vehicles in good working order so they do not leak fluids.

  11. Monitoring Water Quality

  12. How does the EPA help with water quality? • Enforces water quality standards and set up educational programs.

  13. What are the indicators Scientist use to determine the health of Water? • The amounts of substances dissolved in the water, the temperature of the water • The kinds of organisms that live in a body of water

  14. List some of the factors that affect the quality of water. • Seasonal changes, Weather, Heavy rains, Human activity, and adding Chemicals

  15. How does dissolved oxygen relate to water temperature? • Colder water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warmer water. • As water temperature increases, the amount of dissolved oxygen decreases.

  16. What are causes of high turbidity? • Soil in runoff, heavy rains, rapid growth of algae

  17. What does a large number of blackfly larvae indicate? • The can live in water that is too polluted so a large number indicates polluted water

  18. Who sets the standards for water quality? • State or U.S. Government

  19. Water Quality Indicators • Look at Vocabulary List # 6-9 • Underline Water Quality Indicators • Box in the 3 Types

  20. Water Quality T-Chart – 1 page

  21. Water Quality Color Chart – page 2 • Label • You will need colored pencils

  27. Water Lab – Make this Chart

  28. Water Lab • Compare the tested water to your Water Quality Charts. • Record whether you think the water quality is Unhealthy or Healthy. • Discuss your results with a neighbor.

  29. Phosphates & Nitrates

  30. Phosphates (Phosphorous)

  31. Nitrates (Nitrogen)

  32. Turbidity

  33. Turbidity

  34. Bio-indicators

  35. Water Quality Lab – Part 2 • Compare the tested water to your Water Quality Charts. • Record whether you think the water quality is Unhealthy or Healthy. • Discuss your results with a neighbor.

  36. Mastery Check - True or False 1. Oil Spill from a boat in the Atlantic Ocean would be a good example of a Point Source Pollution.

  37. Mastery Check – True or False 2. pH most directly affects the amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water.

  38. Mastery Check – True or False 3. The amount of dissolved oxygen is a accurate way to determined the overall health of a body of water.

  39. Mastery Check – True or False 4. Low turbidity would represent a high number of contaminants in the water.

  40. Mastery Check – True or False 5. Groundwater contaminate contained in fertilizers and pesticides comes from nitrates.

  41. Mastery Check – True or False 6. Biologist use indicator species to count the number of organisms present in water.

  42. Mastery Check – True or False 7. Too many nutrients in an estuary may cause large amounts of algal blooms that would lead to lower dissolved oxygen levels, causing fish to suffocate.

  43. Mastery Check – True or False 8. Turbidity can be determined by measuring how light travels through water.

  44. Mastery Check – True or False 9. There will be positive health effects on wildlife if river water temperature rises above 350 C

  45. Mastery Check – True or False 10. High concentration of Phosphates and nitrates can enter water through runoff from impermeable surfaces.

  46. Mastery Check – True or False Grab a colored pencil to grade your own paper.

  47. Mastery Check - True or False 1. Oil Spill from a boat in the Atlantic Ocean would be a good example of a Point Source Pollution. True

  48. Mastery Check – True or False 2. pH most directly affects the amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water. False temperature

  49. Mastery Check – True or False 3. The amount of dissolved oxygen is a accurate way to determined the overall health of a body of water. True
