Who am I? • Machinist (Fitter & Turner) by original trade (a LONG time ago) • 8 years in retail electronics sales • Two exceptionally useless undergraduate degrees; • BSc – Zoogeography of the Human Malarial Parasites • BA (Psych / Animal Behaviour), Formation of Leap Order in Male Domestic Haitian Chickens (i.e., ‘Cock Fighting’) • 4 years with PwC Sustainability Services (3 in SA, 1 in Canada) • 3 years with KPMG Sustainability Services (SA) • 3 years independent sustainability consultant • 3+ years with IRAS (formerly SustainabilityServices.co.za)

What are we doing? • The goal is to provide a quick ‘’Beginner’s Guide to Reporting” via an interactive workshop • Thus, the first exercise is as follows… • Break away into your groups: • Altron & Anglo American plc • Sasol & Wilderness • Vodacom & SMYLe • Illovo Sugar & Massmart • Discuss “your homework”…

Your homework assignment… • Scan the two assigned reports and ‘pick a favourite’ • Explain what made you choose the one report over the other • Create a list of no fewer than 10 Strengths…and 5 Weaknesses • …or… • Create a list of no fewer than 10 Weaknesses…and 5 Strengths • Nominate a “spokesmodel”…who will present on your group’s behalf

  6. 14 Steps to Effective Reporting Engage an assurance provider! Determine your scope & boundaries Identify what IS…or IS NOT material Establish your data wish list and distribute it for collection and collation Establish a ‘Combined Assurance Map’ Consolidate your stakeholder engagement outcomes into a meaningful summary Draft your report based on a clearly defined theme (e.g., according to your MMIs) Check the draft of your report against the GRI Guidelines, to ensure that you are including all that is relevant/reasonably expected Issue a draft of to the Chairman/CEO/FD…to influence THEIR writing of THEIR statements Give the report to a highly talented design team (Studio 5, HKLM, Bastion, Envisage, Fleishman Hillard, etc.)…and let them convert words into a story! Ensure that the assurance provider conducts an overall quality assurance of the report…not just the accuracy of data…but ONLY in the context of materiality! Make sure you publish it! Even if going ‘web only’, ensure hard copies are available! Make sure you link it properly! URLs to online versions are accurate…and available! Use it! The best way to make a report better is to use it for management purposes!
