  • He is the most famouswriter in the world.
  • Third child of eight children
  • Born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford upon Avon, England
  • Studied Latin subjects in school
  • He had no other formal education

  • Married Anne Hathaway at age 18 (she was 26)
  • After his wife had twins, he left them and moved to London
  • 1594-Charter member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men~ King’s Men
  • He provided this company with plays on demand.

  • Romeo and Juliet was one of the earliest plays that Shakespeare wrote.
  • Written between 1594 and 1596
  • He returned to Stratford in 1612 and had written 37 plays including Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth
  • He is also known as “The Bard” which is a title for poet or one who sings.
  • If Shakespeare was alive today, he would be receiving $25,000 a week in royalties for just one of his plays alone!

  • Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 at age 52.
  • He is buried under the old stone floor in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford.
  • These words are carved over his grave.

  • It stood three stories high
  • Had a large platform stage that had an open yard on one side
  • The back was curtained off to house an inner stage

  • Plays were held in the afternoon
  • No furniture
  • Elaborate costumes
