  1. HELLO! When you arrive to class today…1. Have your notes from last night’s homework video on your desk!2. Be able to answer the question, “why are cells small?” if it’s asked of you.

  2. Bellwork: September 4Look at the two cells below (A and B). Write at least 5 things you observe about these cells. (Example…tell me how they are similar or how they are different) Cell A Cell B

  3. Science Fact of the Day:The Golden "Poison Dart" frog in South America is most poisonous vertebrate in the world.

  4. CO:I will compare and contrast types of cells.LO:I will complete a T-Chart to compare/contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. I will look at types of cells with a partner.

  5. The Egg Demo

  6. How to fill in your notes: Prokaryotes Eukaryotes BOTH

  7. Surrounded by a cell membrane. Have ribosomes (make proteins) Contain DNA Have the ability to reproduce Maintain homeostasis Respond to stimuli Six characteristics that all cells have in common: Write this in the “BOTH” column!

  8. Cells fall into two broad categories depending on whether they contain a nucleus.

  9. EukaryotesThe next few slides will go on the right side of your T-Chart under “Eukaryotes”ONLY write the information in BOLD!

  10. Eukaryotes are…organisms with cells that contain a nucleus.

  11. Eukaryotic cells are…larger and more complex

  12. Have internal membrane-bound organelles. Have a nucleus. Eukaryotic cells…

  13. Eukaryotes are… both unicellular or multicellular.

  14. Eukaryotes can…reproduce sexually or asexually • Asexual reproduction of a sea anemone by fission.

  15. Animals Plants Fungi Protists Eukaryotic examples…

  16. ProkaryotesThe next few slides will go on the left side of your T-Chart under “Prokaryotes”ONLY write the information in BOLD!

  17. Prokaryotic Cells…organisms that do NOT contain a nucleus.

  18. Prokaryotes are…smaller andsimpler

  19. Prokaryotic cells… do not have membrane-bound organelles.

  20. Prokaryotes are… unicellular organisms.

  21. Prokaryotes…reproduce asexually

  22. Prokaryotic examples: bacteria. WHEN I SAY PROKARYOTE, YOU SAY BACTERIA!

  23. Flip your notes over……on the top of the paper write “Endosymbiotic Theory”Only write what is in bold!

  24. Endosymbiotic Theory • “endo” = inside of • “sym” = together • “biotic” = living • “theory” = scientific explanation based on scientific evidence …Put that all together and you get…

  25. Endosymbiotic Theory • The theory that the eukaryotic cell is actually composed of prokaryotic cells • One prokaryotic cell living inside of another prokaryotic cell, made a more complex cell called the eukaryotic cell • Organelles were once independent prokaryotes

  26. Endosymbiotic Theory Prokaryotic Cell #1 Prokaryotic Cell #2 (chloroplast) NEW Eukaryotic Cell Prokaryotic Cell #1 Prokaryotic Cell #2 (mitochondria) NEW Eukaryotic Cell

  27. Endosymbiotic Theory Videos Endosymbiotic Clay-mation Endosymbiotic Theory: Big Tony and Little Jon

  28. Below your notes, number 1-6.With a partner, decide whether the cells on each slide are a prokaryotic or eukaryotic slide.Be sure to put a reason WHY you chose your answer. The team to get the most right will get a prize 

  29. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  30. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  31. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  32. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  33. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  34. Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?

  35. Answers: • Prokaryotic—no nucleus, no organelles • Eukaryotic—plant cells, green discs are chloroplasts (organelle) • Eukaryotic—complex, contains a nucleus, many organelles • Prokaryotic—small, simple, no organelles are seen • Prokaryotic—small, simple, no organelles are seen • Eukaryotic—unicellular, organelles present

  36. Exit Ticket! • On your stickie note write 3 major differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. • You do not need to put your name on it!
