  1. Our goal: to study all states of strongly interacting matter, partonic, hadronic and nuclear, & discover new ones Quark-gluon plasma RHIC/PHENIX & CERN/ALICE 6 staff physicists Nucleon structure CERN/COMPASS & JLab/CLAS & Theory 11 Nuclear structurefrom SPIRAL to SPIRAL2, + the whole palette of radioactive beams & Theory 12 Interfaces between fundamental physics and applications spallation, neutron-induced reactions, nuclear energy, fission, non-proliferation, nuclear astrophysics 11 (+ 9 post-docs, 12 students, 2 scientific advisors, 2 direction, 2 administration, 2 technicians) SPhNtoday

  2. Nucleon structure First generation of dedicated DVCS experiments in progress. A clear perspective: GPD@JLab/12 GeV. New theoretical concepts, innovative technics Very rich harvest at COMPASS → ∆G, polarized parton distributions (L&T), spectroscopy… Proposition to SPSC spring 2010, including GPD program. Theory: - first lattice QCD results (ETMC), - heavy baryon phenomenology - baryon resonances.

  3. Institute for Researchinto the Fundamentallaws of the Universe SACM Sedi Senac SIIEV SIS Detectors Electronics Computing Engineering Slow control SAp SPhN SPP Total staff ~ 628

  4. MicromegasatIrfu Sedi: R&D, Cern/Cast, Sphere,… SPhN:Compass, CLAS12, Cern/n_TOF, Ganil/NFS/TPC, Ganil/BTD, GSI/Minos SPP:T2K, sLHC/Atlas/Mamma, ILC/TPC

  5. CLAS12 Central Detector Specifications driven by measurements of deep exclusive reactions Detection of large angle/low energy recoil protons, e.g. in PR12-06-119 approved DVCS on proton ALU, AUL & σ Detection of large angle/low energy recoil neutrons, e.g. in LOI12-09-001 DVCS on neutron strongly encouraged

  6. CLAS12 Central Detector First suggestion of a European enterprise (together with Korea, Russia and JLab) by Volker Central tracker: - fast cylindrical Micromegas becoming a real option - optimal resolutions with mixed Si/MM tracker - important for p-DVCS to reduce material thicknesses Space available between CTOF and solenoid - unique opportunity to measure n-DVCS CTOF - is the design frozen? Common headache for all: large solenoidal field

  7. Objectives for this meeting (1) • Update on all subsystems • Central tracker: • (define the way to) optimize the mixed Si/MM configuration • MM: any further proof of feasability required? • Electronics • Forward vertex tracker: any issues ? • Neutron detector • Brainstorming on conceptual design • Define further R&D and/or simulations • CTOF • Optimal configuration? • Is a mixed system CTOF/neutron counter an option? • If not, will Europe be involved?

  8. Objectives for this meeting (2) • Integration (exchange on design, organization, coordination,...) • MoU’s and other formal aspects • Agenda for all actions discussed during the course of the meeting
