  1. 1) What are the different ways in which the FILM industry makes money from audiences? There are so many ways that a film industry can make money. the really obvious one is selling the film in a DVD/ Blue ray form, broadcasting it in the cinemas on even online film watching still can make the company millions.  Another way that  film companies make there money is through production placement, this is where another company that produces actual product e.g. Coca cola. Coca cola now will pay the film company to feature their product in there production.  Another way is through development funds. if you’re a small film company like for example revolver is a small film company who made kidulthood they would have used development funds they will get sponsored by another film company who will give them money to make there film. Another one was Malcolm X he made his film independently he asked a company for money to make his film but they didn’t agree so he went around to famous black Americans asking to donate money to him so he could make his film, he went and asked Danny Glover, Opera etc. and they all donated enough money for him and his small company to make his film.

  2. 2) What is meant by product placement – what famous examples are there of films that have used product placement. production placement is when a company pays a film or TV company to feature their product in their production. Companies like apple, coca-cola and Volkswagen will pay thousands of pounds or dollars to make big production companies like Universal and Warner Brothers to feature their products in their productions as much as they can so all the audience will see there brands and remember their logos and want to buy their products.

  3. 3) Where do Independent film companies get their funding BBC Films is a independent film company, there are many ways for this company to make Funds to make their films. For example; Local Council: Local councils will often put money towards a short filmmaking initiative, especially if it deals with social exclusion or aids the local community in some way. You could visit your local council or county website to find out if their arts department will support a film project. Charities: A number of charities fund short films (often though on an ad hoc basis). If you're interested in getting funding from a charity, think laterally about the type of film you are trying to make and don’t be afraid to contact organizations that are in some way linked to the topic/goal of your film. For example the Welcome Trust( UK largest medical research charity) has a art awards that funds projects (including short films) inspired by biomedical science. Completion Funding: Just as it is difficult to fund a film from scratch, it can be equally as hard to find that last bit of funding for final stages of post-production. During the UK Film Council era, the New Cinema Fund ran a scheme, produced by Maya Vision International, called the completion Fund that offered up to £50,000 to support filmmakers and production companies in securing vital funds for the completion of short film projects that have already been shot but lack the funds to finish. Whether this will continue to run in the post- UKFC era is yet to be clarified.

  4. 4)Explain how sponsorship deals work within the film industry? Sponsorship deals work within the film industry because it helps the company make some money before a film has even been released into cinemas. There will be a number of film companies that will decide to do a sponsorship deal and sell merchandise or different products that link their films tocompanies to make more money before the film has even come out. For example, Disney made $150 million (£95million) by doing a sponsorship deal with companies like McDonalds, Haribo and Toys R Us and Wal-Mart have joined in with the production. The deal they did with McDonalds is sold a large amount of there merchandise (i.e. stuffed toys) when parents by their children happy meals they get a toy, then they persuade their parents that they want to go see this new film that is about to come out, that makes money for the film company. Weeks later another characters will be sold with happy meals and the children want to go back to McDonalds to collect all the characters from the film, and this is a continua's cycle of making money for both the film company and the company selling their merchandise.
