  3. Independent Clause • An independent clause stands alone. • This clause expresses a complete thought, and • It contains a subject and a verb. Example: My friendspoke to the police.

  4. Dependent Clause A dependent clause dependson the independent clause and cannot stand alone. This clause has a subject and verb but does not state a complete thought. Example: My friendspoke to the police while his companiondrove away. “while his companiondrove away” contains a subject and verb but cannot stand alone.
