  5. Mercantilism • More gold = more power • Colonies sell raw goods to England • Colonies can only sell to mother country: can’t make own goods

French and Indian War • War to decide who would be stronger in America: France or English • Fighting over land • England has to borrow $ and raise taxes • 7 years later, British win. • Strains relations with the colonists: • Colonists don’t appreciate British protection • British don’t respect colonists
