Purpose of Strategy: • Idioms allow students to know the meaning of a group of words that may not make sense. • For instance, it is raining cats and dogs outside. • The students will know that it is not really raining cats and dogs and that it is just a phrase to express how hard it may be raining. 

  3. What is an idiom? • Definition: An idiom is an expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from meanings of the words that make it up. • Our meaning: to allow students to know the meaning of a group of words that may not make sense. • For instance, It is raining cats and dogs outside. The students will know that it is not raining cats and dogs and it is just a phrase that means it is raining.

  4. Discuss with a partner the following idioms: • This is a piece of cake! • I am in a pickle. • She opened a can of worms this time! • I guess my eyes were bigger than my stomach! • I’m on top of the world!

  5. Answers • This is easy. • I am in a difficult situation or I am in trouble. • Start a lot of trouble that will be hard to stop. • You were not as hungry as you thought you were. • Everything is going my way or I am happy.

  6. Now it is time to come up with your own idiom.
