What is Cholesterol? • Waxy, fat-like substance in the blood • HDL: High Density Lipoprotein: absorbs fat in the blood and carries it to the liver to be flushed out by the body. • LDL: Low Density Lipoprotein: the most abundant in the blood and is partly responsible for the plaque build up in arteries. • Triglycerides: Another type of fat in the blood.

  4. What is Cholesterol • Necessary for bodily functions, however in excess can cause heart attack, stroke, coronary heart disease. • Most of blood cholesterol is produced in the liver, however about 25% is from the foods we eat.

  6. Cholesterol & Heart Disease • LDL cholesterol, along with other particles, is responsible for plaque formation . • High blood pressure a long with high cholesterol greatly increases your risk for heart disease.

  7. Risk Factors • Family History • Physical Inactivity • Overweight/Obese • Diet • High in cholesterol, trans fat, and saturated fat

Prevention & Management • A heart healthy diet • High in fiber, whole grains and legumes (beans) • Plenty of fruits and vegetables 2-3 cups of each • Healthy fats, olive oil & canola oil • Limit cholesterol, saturated fat and avoid trans fat • 300 mg cholesterol per day • 200 mg cholesterol per day if you have heart disease

  9. Prevention & Management • Get the recommended amount of exercise • 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week • Resistance training at least 2 days per week • Exercise is especially important in raising your HDL’s

  10. Prevention & Management • Get checked regularly as recommended by your doctor • Quick smoking and other tobacco products • Weight loss • Medications and Herbal supplements

Summary • If you haven’t already, get your blood cholesterol checked! • High Cholesterol put you at a much greater risk for heart disease. • A heart healthy diet and an exercise routine can prevent and manage high cholesterol. • Much of cholesterol production is genetic and medication may be needed in combination with lifestyle changes.
