  1. Conclusions

  2. The Purpose • The conclusion gives the reader a sense of completion. It often refers back to the introduction and always re-emphasizes or reminds the reader of your thesis or purpose for writing.

  3. Conclusions MUST • Begin with a transition (In conclusion, To wrap things up, All in all, Finally, In summary, etc.) • Restate your purpose for writing/thesis • Summarize BRIEFLY your main ideas • End with a “BOOM” sentence—a sentence that really grabs their attention and makes them think. It can be a BIG BOOM or a bitty boom.

  4. Five Possibilities for the final sentence • End with a thought provoking question • Give a solution • Give a recommendation for the reader • Make a prediction • Use a quotation

  5. Question • It is clear that man’s best friend makes the best pet ever. They are simply the most friendly, give and receive the best kisses, and can turn the drearies into a sunny day. Don’t you think you need to hurry out and get a dog of your own?

  6. Solution • Reading is really the most important thing in daily life. It helps you to be able to get a job, helps your education, and you can stay informed with the news. So remember this, just because you were able to read to the end of this paper doesn’t mean that everyone else you know can. Maybe you should help teach anyone you can to read.

  7. Recommendation • We all know Coach Given; she’s witty, hard working, talented, knowledgeable, and always an optimist. Because of these qualities, I know she deserves to be honored for her work at Evans Middle School, and it’s about time everyone else offers her the praise she deserves.

  8. Prediction • Cats are simply the best pet ever. With their soft, strokable fur, constant and undying love, and easy to keep nature, I predict that every family in America will be a cat owner in the very near future. If they’re not, they’re missing out on greatness.

  9. Quotation • Being able to read is the one thing in life that is going to make everything that much easier. By not being able to read, you have simply made life much harder than it needs to be. If reading is so helpful, why not learn to read now? As Imani Blocker would say, “Get with it, or get real.” So get with it and learn to read.

  10. DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! • Contradict something you said earlier in your paper • Introduce anything new in the conclusion • Apologize for anything • Use those horrible ending lines such as: • I hope you enjoyed my paper • That is why I wrote about • The end
