  • Our curriculum will be based on the ideas of John Dewey, Lev Vygostsky, structure of the Connecticut arts and social studies curriculum framework and Robert Slavin’s Cooperative Learning Strategies (STAD)

Objectives

  • Our main goal is to insure that the students gain a thorough understanding of the history of flamenco dance while having fun.
  • Students will walk away with the knowledge and appreciation of flamenco dance and the role that it plays in Spanish culture.

Day 1

History of Flamenco

Objective:

  • Students will gain a background in flamenco dance

Activities:

  • Quick Facts
  • Puzzle (Review of previously learned material)
  • Introduction to week long project
  • Journal Entry

Day 2

Audio/Visual

Objective:

  • Students will be introduced to the music and become acquainted with flamenco movements.

Activities:

  • Video on Flamenco Performance
  • Music of the guitarist Paco Peña and other music
  • Part II of week long project
  • Journal Entry

Day 3

Language and Style

Objective:

  • Students will learn the vocabulary (in Spanish) and attire associated with flamenco dance.

Activities:

  • Pronunciation and Understanding of flamenco vocabulary words using the STAD method
  • Presentation of flamenco attire (shawls, skirts, shoes, castanets, etc.)
  • Part three of week long project
  • Journal Entry

Day 4

Lets Dance!

Objective:

  • Students will learn how to dance flamenco.

Activities:

  • Presentation by Melinda Marquez
  • Journal Entry

Day 5

Jeopardy!

Objective:

  • Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the history of flamenco

Activities:

  • Play Jeopardy – questions will be developed based off of material learned throughout the week
  • Journal Entry

Day 6

Presentations

Objective:

  • Students will walk away with an understanding of their peers’ cultural background. (From Presentations)

Activities:

  • Presentations Part I (3 minutes per person, 10 students)
  • Presentations Part II
  • Journal Entry

Day 7

Creativity and Celebration

Objectives:

  • Students will learn how to make traditional flamenco skirts
  • Students will also demonstrate the dance moves they learned on Day 4

Activities:

  • Make the flamenco skirts
  • Put on a small dance performance to celebrate their newly acquired skill.
  • Hand in Paper
  • Final Journal Entry

Evaluation

  • Students will be evaluated based upon their class participation (working actively within their groups, and producing thought provoking and creative work).
  • Students will be evaluated on their interview presentation, in addition to the questions that were asked for their interview and a 2 page paper summarizing the interview and other information that they would like to add.
  • Students will be evaluated on how well they do on their vocabulary quiz .
  • Students will be evaluated on their journal entries
