  2. Who? • Originally believed to be the Apostle Matthew. • We now know Mark’s gospel was first. • Very little is known about the author’s actual identity as it is widely disputed

  3. Audience • The audience for Mathew was most likely writing to Jewish Christians. • The author assumes his audience already knows Jewish tradition and speaks in Jewish dialect.

  4. When? • It is difficult to pin point exactly when it was written, due to the dispute of who the author was. • It was believed to be written anywhere from 60 A.D. to 110 A.D.

  5. Background information • Author may have known the apostle Mathew as well as used Mark’s gospel. • Called the first gospel even though mark’s gospel was the first. • Originally in Greek writing • Outlined in 5 major sections

  6. What is the author trying to do or say? • He is trying to relate the new testament to the old testament. • He is also trying to bring gentiles to the church • How Jesus fulfills the old testament prophecies. • Tells his authors that they should spread the gospel to all people.

  7. Portrayal of Jesus • The author portrays Jesus as the teacher. • Has 2 different important names for Jesus • Son of David- to depict Him as the promise to Israel • Emmanuel- to reveal Jesus’ true identity. • Jesus came to fulfill, not to overthrow the Law. • Jesus as the founder of the church.

  8. Sample passage (the beatitudes) • Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him, 2and He began to teach them, saying: • 3Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. • 4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. • 5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. • 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, • for they will be filled. • 7Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy. • 8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. • 9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God. • 10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. • 11Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  9. How the passage shows Matthews gospel • Jesus is showing the people how to live= Jesus the teacher • Many of the lines are in the old testament. • so he relates old test. To new test. • He shows how Jesus fulfill the prophecies.
