SUSTAINABILITY- the U.N. says Sustainability is : the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
How can we live more sustainably? • Rely on solar energy • Maintain biodiversity • Support nutrient cycling • Support population control
PRINCIPLES • Value natural capital ( resources) • Recognize degradation & overuse • Search for solutions • Make compromises/trade-offs • Individuals matter
Match to one of 4 principles • Recycling soda cans • Use a rake instead of a leaf blower • Choose to have no more than 1 child • Walk/bike instead of drive • Use reusable bags when shopping • Volunteer to help restore a beachfront • Lobby elected officials to require that 20% of all electricity generated comes from wind power
Agree or disagree? • Humans are superior to other forms of life • Humans are in charge of the Earth • All economic growth is good • The value of other forms of life depends on if they are useful to us • Because all forms of life eventually become extinct, we should not worry if we are causing them to b/c extinct faster • All forms of life have an inherent right to exist
Agree or Disagree? • Nature has an unlimited storehouse of resources for humans • Technology can solve our economic problems • I do not believe I have any obligation to future generations • I do not believe I have any obligation to any other forms of life
