  1. Note Taking& Note Sheets A PROCESS!!!!!!

  2. BEFORE Notes • Print out ALL electronic sources • READdiligently and selectively • Highlight or mark information you are considering using • Determine what information you’ll actually need from each source • Decide what to quote, paraphrase and summarize

  3. Taking Notes • Use your own words. Do not write in complete sentences. Use abbreviations and symbols. • Enclose direct quotes in large quotation marks. Make sure it is exact words. • Double check note before going on to the next one. • One idea per note!

  4. Three Types of Notes • DIRECT QUOTE • PARAPHRASE • SUMMARY • It is important that you understand the difference in order to know when to use which one!

  5. NOTE TYPE 1 • Direct quotes– Copy the quote word for word and enclose the quoted material in large quotation marks. The jumbo marks will alert you immediately the wording in not yours! • USED WHEN YOU CANNOT SAY IT BETTER YOURSELF!

  6. NOTE TYPE 2 • Paraphrasing – When you paraphrase a text, you restate the writer’s ideas in your own words. A paraphrase covers every idea in the same order but usually it is shorter. • Even if you do not copy it word for word, you are stealing or kidnapping the writer’s ideas. Unless you give credit to the original writer for his or her thoughts, YOU ARE PALGIARIZING!!

  7. NOTE TYPE 3 • Summary – When you summarize, you restate the main ideas in you own words. A summary does not give you ALL the details-only the important ones.

  8. Note Sheets • The source note sheets must include direct quotes, paraphrasing, andsummaries of research material. • Must have a minimum of at least 25 notes turned in. In most cases you will have more! • Information cannot be repeated even if it is from a different source, it will not count! • Research must be balanced. One source cannot have more than 33% of the citations used in the paper.

  9. Note Sheets • Notes sheets will begin with a full and correct citation of the source (use citation guide handout). • ALL notes from that particular source should be listedbelow the citation in bullet form and include the page number or paragraph number. • Double space between each submission.

  10. Due with final paper! Get Going!
