  2. Reflecting on Identity • Do you remember when you first thought about your own identity? • Has your conception of yourself changed over time? • How do various labels make you feel? Proud, embarrassed, indifferent? • What agents/ factors play a role in attempting to create or preserve a particular identity? Our group discussed these questions, among others, and decided on three groups that we felt were relevant to us. We all have different narratives and perspectives, but we discovered parts of ourselves—whether we liked them or not—that we all had in common. The following slides show some of what came to mind…

  3. A National Identity: What words describe America? • Wealth • Power • Hollywood • Reality TV • Democracy • Freedom • Fast Food • Big Business • Diversity • Choice • Consumerism • Abundance • Beauty • Land • Music • What would you add? *4

  5. Generation Y, Millennials, iGens, Echo Boomers “This generation […] has been pressed for its vote, sought for its purchasing power and watched closely by sociologists and historians for insight into the way its members will shape the future.” -Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY • According to an October, 2006 article in USA today, our generation is defined by a strong sense of social responsibility. • Several surveys found that gen y has majority participation when it comes to volunteering, activism, and choosing where to buy and work according to a company’s environmental sensitivity. • The majority of this generation polled also said they want to work for the government. • Do you agree? Disagree? *5

  6. Our School: What is Hoover High School? • Lots of people! • Great sporting events • High scholastic achievement • Hoover has been named one of 24 model schools in the nation and will present at the 16th annual Model Schools Conference in Orlando this summer.* • Nationally Known • Quality Educators • State of the art technology • Caring Staff • Extremely Diverse • Hanging out in the courtyard *http://www.hoover.k12.al.us/hhs/Counselors/JINGRAM/HHSNamedMode%20School.pdf

  7. What is your identity at HHS? • Do you identify yourself with a particular social/academic/sport related group? • How do you feel when you are stereotyped? • How do you think the diversity of the student body affects forming group identity? • What do you think defines your student class and the student body as a whole? • Think about the “insider” information you share with your friends at school that others would not know about. How is this behavior part of maintaining identity?
