  2. Novice to Expert • Describes how nurses obtain clinical knowledge and critical thinking • Progressive learning model that builds upon previous knowledge and experience • Advancement throughout stages is not automatic • Acquired by willingness to learn from past experiences and build upon

  3. 1. Novice • Nursing students start a program at this level • Have NO experience • Taught how to perform tasks and procedures • Performed exactly as the “steps” say to

  4. 2. Advanced Beginner • Nursing school graduates usually function at this level • Clinical judgment based on prior experience from clinical situations • Understands rules and can be “adapted” • Progression based on mentoring and repeated experiences

  5. 3. Competence • Obtained after several years of practice • Becomes more efficient and organized • Can prioritize • Engaged in caregiving: not just task completion

  6. 4. Proficient • Resource to less experienced staff • Flexible • Holistic

  7. 5. expert • This is a goal, not all will reach! • Rely on intuition • Clinical performance is highly proficient • Many years of clinical experience and ability to learn from these experiences develops an expert nurse
