  2. Characteristics of Bacteria • Eubacteria and Archaebacteria contain the oldest forms of life on earth. All bacteria are singled-celled organisms. • Bacteria are usually one of three main shapes: bacilli = rod shaped cocci =spherical Spirilla = long and spiral

  3. Bacteria do not have a nucleus (prokaryote) or membrane bound organelles. • Eukaryotes have nucleus and membrane organelles.

  4. Bacterial Reproduction • Bacteria reproduce by the process of binaryfission. This is when one singled-celled organisms splits into two single-celled organisms.

  5. Eubacteria • Eubacteria are classified by how they get their food. Most eubacteria are consumers: get food by eating other organisms.

  6. Archaebacteria • Three types: • heat lovers: live in ocean vents and hot springs • salt lovers: live in environments that contain high levels of salt (Dead Sea) • methane lovers: Animal intestines Archaebacteria live where nothing else can survive.
