  1. Patterns of Dispersion Jordan, Tim and Tom

  2. Three types of Dispersion • Clumped • Uniform • Random Provide insight into social interactions in populations and environmental characteristics at a local level.

  3. Clumped • A clumped dispersion describes a group of like organisms clustered around certain thing(s), such as food and water.

  4. WHY?- Clumped • May be associated with mating behavior • Increase effectiveness of predators (pack animals • Safety in numbers • Aptitude of environment (soil quality)

  5. Uniform • An even dispersion of organisms due to environmental factors.

  6. Why?- Uniform • Antagonistic social interactions: territoriality • Competition for resources • Some plants secrete chemicals that inhibit the germination of nearby plants.

  7. Random • The random dispersion of organisms that it independent of other individual organisms of the same species

  8. Why?-Random • Completely unpredictable dispersion of organisms • Due to absence of strong attractions or repulsions among individuals • i.e. Seeds blown in the wind (Dandelions/Maples)

  9. CHEERS!
