  2. Tanzanian Computer Project • Started in Fall 2008 • Supporting schools near Arusha, Tanzania • Provided computers with internet access to schools lacking resources and funding George & Vickie Rock

  3. Current Setup • 2 schools have internet access • 6 seats running off of 1 computer 6 User Multi-Seat System

  4. Limitation of Current System • No audio at individual seats • Incorrect keyboard and mouse association

  5. Our Project • Implement multiuser system at a 3rd school • Minimize keyboard and mouse association errors • Provide audio capabilities for each seat at all three schools

  6. Design Criteria • Low Cost • User Friendly • Low Maintenance • Withstand Hot Climate

  7. MDM Overview • Software chosen to run multiple seats • Not an actual display manager • Install process and configuration files • Runs nested, virtual sessions

  9. AUDRI • Assistive USB Device Registration Interface • Consists of • 6 user hubs • 1 communication hub

  10. User Hub • Used for links between six seats and the communication hub • Consists of • 2 LEDs • 1 start/stop button • 3 input jacks • 2 audio output jacks

  11. Communication Hub • Provides switching of keyboards and mice • 12 inputs and12 outputs • 6 keyboards and 6 mice • Contains microcontroller and circuit for communication

  12. Audio • The Problem • By default, MDM only plays sound for one user at a time • Has to be configured with each seat • USB sound devices • Plugged into AUDRI communication box

USB Drives • Added feature for the customer • The problem • Not setup with default MDM installation • USB drives can only access one user at a time • Why use it? • Additional user functionality • Useful for teachers and students • Teachers can distribute assignments • Students can submit assignments

  14. Cost A savings of over 70% per seat

  15. Summary • Created 6 user multi-seat system • System has audio capabilities • Minimizes association errors • Allows for USB drives • Project implementation
