It is an ongoing process that starts with the decision to hire an employee and continues until the new hire is a productive member of the team. • Onboarding is a comprehensive process involving management and other employees that can last up to 12 months.

Human resources slide 3 Retain Acclimate • New hires need to be made aware of what they can expect from the company, such as management support, availability of resources or performance reviews. • Monetary costs to replace an employee can be as much as 150 percent of the annual salary. • An effective onboarding plan assists in helping an organization to retain employees. • A study by the Aberdeen Group found that 86% of employees decide whether to stay or go within their first six months of employment. Engage • An effective onboarding plan offers an ideal opportunity to boost employee engagement.

Effective Onboarding Tips Human resources slide 2 • Effectively recruit and hire individuals for a cultural fit • Prepare a comprehensive, written statement of the new hire's responsibilities and objectives • Choose an employee -- ideally a peer of the new hire -- to assist with orientation and acclimation. • As the onboarding process continues, managers should offer encouragement, review the employee's progress and provide feedback • When new hires arrive for their first day on the job, they have the right to have their work area ready to go.
