  1. Trinity: The 3 in 1 God Resolve it, lose your mind. Deny it, lose your soul.

  2. Basic Outline Trinitarian Worship is Biblical Trinitarian Worship is Beautiful Trinitarian Worship is Practical

  3. I. Trinitarian Worship is Biblical • I am indebted to Mark Driscoll in much of this section • There is only One God • God is three Persons • The Father is God • Jesus is God • The Holy Spirit is God • The three persons are one in divinity, yet distinct in personhood

  4. A. There is only One God Deut 6:1 Shema: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” Deut 4:35b “..the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.” Deut 32:39 “There is no god besides me.” Ps 86:10 “For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.” Is 43:10b “Before me no god was formed,        nor will there be one after me.” Is 45:5 “I am the LORD, and there is no other;        apart from me there is no God.” 1 Tim 1:17 “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

  5. God is three Persons

  6. 1. The Father is God Eph 4:4-6 “4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Matt 6:9-10 “9This, then, is how you should pray:    " 'Our Father in heaven,    hallowed be your name, 10your kingdom come,    your will be done       on earth as it is in heaven.” Too many other texts to mention, and almost nobody contends with this anyway.

  7. 2. Jesus is God Jn 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jn 8:56-59 “56Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." 57"You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!“ 58"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I AM!" 59At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.‘”

  8. 2. Jesus is God Jn 20:27-28 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.“ 28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!” Titus 2:13 “13while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”

  9. 3. The Holy Spirit is God 2 Cor 3:17-18 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom…ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” Acts 5:3-4 3Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…You have not lied to men but to God.“ Lk 12:10 10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  10. 3. The Holy Spirit is God • The Holy Spirit is a Person, not an impersonal force • Can be grieved (Eph 4:30) • His will can be resisted (Acts 7:51) • Can be insulted (Heb 10:29)

  11. What we’ve got so far… There is only One God The Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God

  12. The Water Analogy:Liquid, Solid, Vapor

  13. The Water Analogy:Liquid, Solid, Vapor • Weakness – Modalism: One God wearing three interchangeable masks. This isn’t right. • “Not my will but yours be done” (Lk 22:42) • Is Jesus praying to himself? • “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” (Jn 17:5) • How do the authors of the NT speak, and how do they never speak? • The Father never took on flesh; the Father was never crucified for sins; Jesus was not poured out on the Church at Pentecost… • The three Persons are distinct and indissoluble, whereas the same water molecules can pass from liquid to solid to vapor.

  14. The Egg Analogy:Shell, White, Yolk

  15. The Egg Analogy:Shell, White, Yolk Weakness: The distinctions are so strong that it could be understood as tritheism. Three separate gods who simply get along rather well, rather than One God in three Persons.

  16. The Trinity Shield

  17. Several Biblical Glimpses of Trinity Creation (Gen 1, Jn 1:1) 1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while the Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said…and there was… Jesus’ Baptism (Matt 3:16-17) 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

  18. II. Trinitarian Worship is Beautiful Congratulations: The hardest part is over.

  19. The Nicene Creed Like the Apostles’ Creed, it has section for each member of the trinity. Notice that poetry and worship, not just accuracy, are at work in the creed – which recognizable even in translation. This ought to be joyfully prayed to God in worship, not angrily shouted at heretical enemies! These are only excerpts…

  20. “We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.” “We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father…” “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets…”

  21. II. Trinitarian Worship is Beautiful Perichoresis – they never “act alone” Creation – a lonely God? Does God sometimes just “need a hug?” God is the happiest Being that ever existed!

  22. III. Trinitarian Worship Is Practical “So what does this mean on Monday morning?”

  23. III. Trinity is Practical • Gen 1:26 “Let us make mankind in our image…” • We are made in the image of an inherently social Being. God is not a monad – he’s never been “alone.” • The first “not good” is before the Fall (!) • Gen 2:18 “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” • A human-shaped hole • Part of the divine image: a longing in every person for human companionship.

  24. Belong Alone

  25. “He who is alone in his sin is utterly alone.” – Bonheoffer “Friendships multiply joy and divide griefs.” – H.G. Bohn Redemption: undoing alienation from God and others Modern challenges to Trinitarian Discipleship…

  26. Conclusion: Essentials for Healthy Christian Community Intimacy Permanence Proximity “Community is the soil out of which discipleship grows.” – Shane Hipps
