  2. Mandates may be… Formal requirements that are codified in laws, statutes, charters etc.or Informal expectations from stakeholders or through cultural norms

  3. Why Start with Mandates? Affects the organization’s actions and resources. Organizations may assume they are more constrained then they actually are. Some mandates can become over emphasized.

  4. Mandates: How To Step 1. (Have someone) compile the organization’s formal and informal mandates - Formal: Review by-laws, charters, statutes etc. - Informal: ???

  5. Mandates: How To Bryson’s Worksheet 7 Step 2: Review the mandates to clarify what is required, forbidden, and allowed.

  6. Mandates: How To Step 3: Remind the organization’s members what it is required to do.

  7. Keep in Mind • Don’t get hung up on mandates. • Consider the mandates of partner organizations in a coalition.

  8. Stirring Discussion 1.) What mandates can we change? 2.) How do our mandates impact the future direction of the organization? 3.) What programs are not affected by mandates? 4.) Is our mission consistent with our mandates?
