Venue: The fifth edition of the exercise is being held at Rabkoot Training Area in Salalah, Oman. The exercise is held biennially since 2015. It is hosted alternatively by India and Oman. The fourth edition of the exercise was held at Mahajan in Rajasthan. Indian Contingent: The Indian Army contingent is comprised of 60 personnel. It is represented by a battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment along with personnel from other arms and services. Oman Contingent: The Royal Army of Oman contingent is also comprised of 60 personnel. It is being represented by the troops of Frontier Force. Aim and Objective of the Exercise: The main aim of the Joint Exercise is to enhance the joint military capability of both sides to undertake counter- terrorism operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.   3. Prelims - General Studies I - History and Art & Culture Saragarhi Day Context September 12 was celebrated as ‘Saragarhi Day’ as the 127th anniversary of the Battle of Saragarhi. Prelims Question 1. The Battle of Saragarhi was fought in 1897 between the 36th Sikh Battalion of the British Indian Army and the Afghan-Afridi Tribesmen. Saragarhi was a military post located between the two forts of the British Indian empire, Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan. These forts were originally built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab during his western expedition. Saragarhi Fort was the critical post for the British. It helped them to monitor any aggressive moves by the Af- ghans. ● ● ● The Battle of Saragarhi: The ‘Great Game’ ● 21 Personnel of the British Indian Army’s 36th Sikh Regiment were guarding the fort when around 8000-10000 Afghan Tribesmen invaded the fort. The regiment’s commanding officer was Havildar Ishar Singh. ● The invaders had cut off the supply routes from the nearby forts which seized the possibility of any reinforcements. ● All the men belonging to the 36th Sikh Regiment along with an Afghan helper (a non-combatant) died valiantly while the Afghan side lost around 800 men. ● The valour and bravery of the tribesmen led to the battle being remembered as ‘The Great Game’ by 3rd Floor, 36 Pusa Road, Above Kalyan Jewellers, Karol Bagh, New Delhi - 110005 +91 96676 61547, +91 96676 68174 www.avadhojhaclasses.com

Saragarhi Day: The Punjab government decided to observe Saragarhi Day on September 12 and declared it as a holiday. PM E-Drive Scheme to push e-mobility sector in India. About Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Heavy Industries ● The Union Cabinet approved the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-Drive) Scheme with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore. ● The scheme aims to provide for the procurement of e-buses as well as for setting up more than 72,000 charging stations for EV batteries in cities and on highways. ● The main objective of the scheme is to address ‘range anxiety’ among e-vehi- cle buyers and thus provide infrastruc- ture support to the e-mobility sector of the country. ● Providing Subsidies to E-Vehicles: The scheme aims to offer subsidies or demand incentives worth ₹3,679 crore for e-two wheelers (e-2Ws), e-three wheelers (e-3Ws), e-ambulances, and e-trucks to buyers. It aims to support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses. ● Subsidies for E-Buses in Select Cities: The scheme aims to provide a total of ₹4,391 crore for the pro- curement of 14,028 e-buses by state transport undertakings for 9 cities with a population of more than 40 lakh. ● These cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. ● Subsidies for Charging Stations in Select Cities: The scheme aims to provide ₹2,000 crore to set up charging stations in select cities with high EV penetration and on some specified highways.
