  1. The Learning Center Positive Behavior Support Program

  2. Our Demographics • Preschool students ages 3,4,& 5 • Head Start, Migrant, VPK, and ESE • 15 classrooms- approximately 260 students • Every teacher has an assistant teacher (one ESE class has 2) • There are no related arts teachers; teachers & assistant teachers do all programs (music, art, physical education, etc.) • One Principal, no Deans • The Campus is shared with an Even Start Program for Mothers and their children.

  3. Due to the age of the children… • Reinforcements must be immediate • Tangible reinforcements (I DID IT tickets) with praise works well. • They want to please the adults around them. • They do not know social rules. • They are self centered and group rewards do not work.

  4. Our Program • Expectation signs are posted in all areas, using the same acronym: • B= Be Responsible • E= Enjoy Learning • A= Always Make Good Choices • R= Respect Others • S= Stay Safe In each areas sign, we show what that means for the area with English and Spanish words as well as pictures.

  5. Our Morning Pledge and Song At TLC, the Bears say: B stands for Be Responsible E stands for Enjoy Learning A stands for Always make good choices R stands for Respect Others…and S stands for Stay Safe. I promise to follow these rules. TLC BEARS! We’re number one, We’re the school that’s safe and fun, We learn and play hands on, With success, we will move on! Hooray!

  6. Individual Reinforcement • Each teacher has a different color of I DID IT tickets including Speech, OT, PT. • Tickets are freely given out by anyone to anyone for appropriate behavior with positive praise. • Each teacher has cups in their classroom to accumulate tickets.

  7. Reinforcement cont’d. • Teachers have treasure chests to reward students for certain # of tickets… • Some teachers additionally use charts, so the children see their growth.

  8. Schoolwide Reinforcement • Individual children are chosen by each teacher to: • Eat lunch with the Principal on Thursdays. • Be on WTLC as a “Blue Ribbon Bear” on Friday mornings where they are asked why they were chosen. • Food rewards (i.e.. popcorn parties) are prohibited by Head Start regulations.

  9. Stop Tickets and Referrals • When a child has done something minor that is inappropriate, they receive a STOP ticket. • 3 stop tickets in one week = major • Referral forms are in triplicate and follows the terminology used in SWIS. • Prior to PBS there were no office referral forms…

  10. Our Referral Form

  11. Lesson Plans • A power point was made of expectations in each area to be used as a lesson plan tool for each teacher: (printed in a book & shown on computer) • Cafeteria expectations • Bus loop/bus expectations • Tricycle area expectations • Hallway expectations • Playground expectations • Bathroom expectations • Classroom: • Circle Time expectations • Nap expectations

  12. One of our power points…

  13. Parent Education • During our Back to School/Literacy night our teachers explained their classroom procedures with I DID IT tickets and gave each parent a 4 page handout about the program (with translations in Spanish and Creole)

  14. Benefits of the program at TLC: • Teachers and Assistant teachers are proactive and positive more than reactive and negative… • Referrals are now being tracked, so we can fix the environment/ teacher training as we observe the need. • Consistent rules are posted everywhere.

  15. Thanks to our PBS Team members, we are a model school: Kate Hickie, Sarah Johnson, Stacey Johlman, Lynda Poole, Pam Purevich, Mary Lynn Fisher, Lisa Pietrzyk,& Geraldine Miller ( & Lisa Smith, Jessica Mendez & Anita Crapse not shown)
