  1. What Is A Plant Chapter 3 Lesson 1

  2. What Characteristics Do All Plants Share??? • KEY ANSWER: 1. Nearly all plants are autotrophs, organisms. 2. All plants contain MANY cells - With the exception of Green Algae 3. All plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall

  3. Characteristics That All Plants Share • Scientists study fossils to determine ancestors of plants • Better clues come from comparing chemicals 1. Chlorophyll- Green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, & some bacteria

  4. Autotrophs • Plants are solar powered food factories • Sunlight provides the energy 2. Photosynthesis- Process by which autotrophs capture & use light energy to make food from CO2 & H2O to make food & O2

  5. Multi-cellular • Cells are organized into Tissues

  6. Plant Cells • You already know about the cell wall • Cell walls are made hard by cellulose • Make apples and carrots crunchy 3. Chloroplasts – structures in which food is made • Vacuole • Stores water, wastes, & food • Why Does a plant wilt? • B/c water has left the vacuoles!

  7. Done For Now

  8. What Do Plants Need To Live Successfully On Land? • Key Answer: For plants to survived on land , they must… 1. have ways to obtain water and other nutrients from their surroundings 2. Retain Water 3. Support their bodies 4. Transport Materials 5. Reproduce

  9. Obtaining Water & Other Stuff • Often need adaptations for obtaining water from soil • Roots are that adaptation

  10. Retaining Water • When there is more water in the plant cells then in the air, the water leaves the plant & enters the air • Adaptations to help plants retain water are cuticles 4. Cuticle- Waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants

  11. Support • Small plants support themselves easier • (obviously) • Cell walls & tissues support the plant bodies

  12. Transporting Materials • In general, water & minerals are transported upward, from the bottom where the food is made. The top part • In small plants, food moves easier from cell to cell • Larger plants need vascular tissue for transportation 5. Vascular Tissue- system of tube-like structures inside a plant thru which materials move.

  13. Reproduction • Can only occur if there is water in the environment • Makes it easier for the sperm to swim thru the water to the egg cells • Land plants need adaptations to make reproduction possible in dry environments

  14. What is the only land animal on Earth that cannot jump? • Elephant
