  10. Data collection methods Hourly and Daily (data entry

  11. Data collection methods (continue) • Upper air data: • EMA has six upper air stations; the data for these stations are automatically collected via Global System for Mobiles (GSM) connections to the headquarters (H.Q), to get into the AMSS and the local database, and finally disseminated to the world. • GTS data: • Recently, the GTS data (Upper air and surface) of the whole world are decoded and then permanently stored in an Oracle database.

  12. Data processing • GTS (Synoptic Charts) • All GTS data sent from AMSS to the IBM Mainframe, to decode it in specific format and then plotting it on synoptic charts to be analyzed by forecaster department

  13. Data processing (Continue) • Hourly and daily data processing: • Data entry section Mainframe Why: • Quality control programs checking • Errors correction • Calculate other fields like (RH,VP…) • Stored data in plane text format files. • Creation and calculation monthly reports

  14. Storage media • On a Database. • On Hard Disk storage. • On Magnetic tapes in plane text format with fixed records of 80 byte record length. • Each Magnetic tape has multiple copies in multiple places.

  15. End user availability • Customer fills an application for his requirements in the climate dept. • The availability of data as averages or Normals is checked. • The cost of data is calculated. • The request is relayed to the IT dept to be processed. • The final results are sent back to the climate dept to be handed to the customer.
