Basics of Sikhism Followers: Sikhs • Monotheistic religion • Founded in Punjab, India, in 15th century by Guru Nanak • Holy City: Amritsar, India • Site of Golden Temple
History of Sikhism, cont. • So…Sikhism came from Hinduism? • Most Sikhs reject the idea that they came from Hinduism • Religions share many similarities • Belief in reincarnation • Karma & dharma • Meditation (yoga) to seek enlightenment
Teachings & Beliefs • Everyone is equal…NO caste system • 10 Gurus (1469 – 1708) • Final guru gave all men last name of Singh and women last name of Kaur • Originally to hide ties to caste • Many Sikhs today still use this last name
Teachings & Beliefs, cont. • All Sikhs must: • Seek purification and overcoming vices/bad character traits • No alcohol, tobacco – things that pollute the body • 5 Characteristics: • Uncut hair (hair wrapped under turban) • Comb • Sword (now ceremonial…not always) • Steel bracelet • Short pants (for battle and modesty)
