  2. History of New Jersey. The Dutch tried to settle but it did not work out. New Jersey was founded in 1664. The founder was Philip Carteret. Philip Carteret was first governor. First town was called Elizabeth Town. They went there was for religious freedom and money. It became a state in 12-18-1787.

  3. More History Giovanni deVerrazono came to New Jersey 1524. 8,000 Indians before Europeans came. The tribe was called Lenni Lanape. New Jersey became a royal colony in 1702. English won New Jersey from the Dutch. It was separated from New York in 1732. New Jersey was given it’s own governor.

  4. New Jersey Now The state animal is a horse. The state flower is the purple violet. The nickname is the garden state. The capital is Trenton. The population is 884,118 people. The state bird is the eastern goldfinch. The state shell is the knobbed whelk.

  5. New Jersey Today Elizabeth Town is still there today. The area is 7,419. The state fish is the brook trout. The state color is buff and blue. The state tree is Red Oak. One famous person is Bud Abbott. Another famous person is Charles Addams.
