Tuesday, May 20th 2014 What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a city?
Here is the plan… • Students will understand the extent to which East Asia is urbanized. • Students will experience city life in the capitals of the 5 capitals of East Asia.
Japan • Japan is about the size of California. • Total population is almost 128 million people. • Ethnic makeup is almost entirely Japanese. • Japan is a relatively “old” society – the median age is 46 years old.
Tokyo • Japan is highly urbanized – over 91% of the population lives in cities. • The capital of Tokyo (city and surrounding metropolis) is home to about 36 million people.
China • China is slightly smaller than the United States of America by total land area. • However, China’s population is about 4X the size of the USA’s – 1.3 billion. • Most of that population is situated in the Eastern part of the country.
Beijing • China is becoming more and more urbanized every year – currently the rate is a little over 50%. • The capital city of Beijing has about 15.5 million people.
North Korea • North Korea has geographic strategic importance (borders Russia, China, and South Korea) but is also internationally isolated. • North Korea is slightly larger than the state of Virginia – it has a total population of about 25 million people.
Pyongyang • The capital city of North Korea is Pyongyang. Pyongyang is a “showcase” city designed to show the North’s success. • North Korea has an urbanization rate of about 60%. • Pyongyang is home to about 2.8 million people.
South Korea • South Korea has a democratic system of government and a capitalist economic system. • South Korea is slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania • The total population of South Korea is about 49 million people.
Seoul • The capital city of Seoul is home to just under 10 million people. • South Korea is a very urbanized society – about 83% of the country lives in cites.
Taiwan • Taiwan is about the combined size of the states of Delaware and Maryland. • Taiwan is home to the “losers” of the Chinese Civil War that took place following WW2. • The total population is about 23 million people.
Taipei • Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan. • The city is located on the northern tip of the country along the Tamsui River. • The population of Taipei is about 2.6 million people.
