  2. IN THE BEGINNING • Quakers came to America to escape religious persecution.

  3. COMING TO AMERICA • William Penn started the state of Pennsylvania as a safe place for Quakers to live and practice there.

  4. Life in America • The Quakers migrated and moved expanding the frontier.

  5. Beliefs and Views • Many helped free slaves and escape from their masters. This caused division because some felt they were breaking the law and they should be separate from the government.

  6. Beliefs and Views • They did not believe in slavery and believed in fair treatment for mentally ill.
