  1. EMERGENCY PLAN SANTA SUSANA HIGH SCHOOL 2012-2013

  2. FIRE If you are in class: • When alarm sounds, get quiet and follow the teacher’s instructions. • Evacuate to the assigned area on the basketball courts. • Move quickly and orderly to help us account for everyone on campus. • Never open hot doors during a fire. Before opening any door, touch the top to check for heat.

  3. FIRE Continued If you are out of class (during lunch, passing, etc.): • When alarm sounds, report DIRECTLY to the teacher of thelast class you attended and line up in their assigned area on the basketball courts

  4. EARTHQUAKE • In a classroom: • DROP, COVER, & HOLD. (under a desk or table) • If you are not able to duck under a table, sit or stand against an inside wall • Stay away from windows & heavy or breakable objects • Do not leave a building during an earthquake! • Wait until you are instructed to stand, and then evacuate to the designated evacuation area

  5. EARTHQUAKE SAFETY TIPS • Trapped in a collapsed building? Protect your airway against dust and debris by breathing through clothing or material • Check yourself for injuries & control any bleeding. • Find a source of light if possible; and make your location known to rescuers by tapping on a solid object with a rock or other instrument. • Save your breath and energy. Delay yelling for help until you hear rescuers very nearby.

  6. EARTHQUAKE Continued Outside of a classroom: • Move away from buildings & utility wires. • DUCK, COVER, & HOLD wherever possible until trembling ends. • Report directly to the basketball courts and line up with the teacher of the last class you attended.

  7. LOCK DOWN/LOCK IN If you are in class: When you hear “This is a Lock Down or Lock In,” please remember the following procedures: • -your teacher will lock the door, close the window coverings, and turn off the lights. • -you should move as far away from the windows as possible • -everyone must remain silent (make sure cell phones are OFF… as always) • -wait silently for instructions from the administration

  8. LOCK DOWN/LOCK IN (Continued) If you are outside of class: When you hear “This is a Lock Down,” you have 2 OPTIONS: 1) If you are close enough to the last class you attended, return there as quickly as possible. 2) If you are not near your last class, IMMEDIATELY enter the closest possible classroom and follow the teacher’s instructions & the “Lock Down” procedures.

  9. EVACUATION ROUTES • Take a moment to look at the evacuation routes for each of your classes. • Remember that your evacuation route may be altered depending upon any structural damage to the campus.

  10. Evacuation Diagram

  11. ASSEMBLY AREA • Look over the assembly area and note where each of your classes assemble. (on next slide) • Assemble in a STRAIGHT LINE behind the classroom number on the blacktop. • Listening silently as your teacher takes roll, makes for an orderly evacuation. • After role, stay with your class so that you can be easily found to be released to someone on your Emergency Card.

  12. EMERGENCY EVACUATION AREA

  13. WHAT IS A BUDDY TEACHER? • There are two buddies; one at the classroom and a second on the basketball courts. • Classroom Buddy – Checks on nearby class to ensure safe evacuation • Evacuation Buddy (on the courts) - Once evacuation is complete, this"buddy" supervises evacuated students while simultaneously releasing some another staff for special assignments such as, search & rescue, medical unit, etc.

  14. Release Request SRU MU Personnel Assembly Area CC ASSEMBLY AREA RR

  15. RELEASING STUDENTS Runners will come for a student in the Assembly Area. • The requested student will accompany runner to release area. • If the student is missing, absent, or in first aid, note this on the runner form.

  16. SAFETY TIPS • Using your cell phone to make a call, clogs the lines of communication. • Because of this clogging, telephone calls cannot be completed. • TEXTING is a much more effective method in communicating since it uses a different technology and does not get congested in the audio band width.
