  3. Introduction: Asteroid Belt Small objects orbiting between Mars and Jupiter orbital radius (semi-major axis) vs. orbit shape (eccentricity)

  4. Introduction: Asteroid Composition • Metallic • Stony (Silicates) • Carbonaceous • P – Dirty Ice • Dark Ice Very non-uniform composition

  5. Introduction: Planet Migration Model • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune form closer to Sun. Large cloud of comet – type bodies • Orbits evolve  Jupiter & Saturn interact  send Uranus & Neptune further out • Comet – type bodies are scattered This model explains many observations: • Late heavy bombardment • Irregular satellites (moons) of Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

  6. Methods: Simulation • Orbital simulation of 30 million comet – type objects while Saturn, Uranus & Neptune migrate outward. • Simulation runs for 10 million years  many objects leave the Solar System • Simulation of 4 billion years of the orbit of existing particles.

  7. Results: Simulated orbits • Shown are: • All large asteroids • Simulated objects • D / P type asteroids • Good fit of • simulated objects to • dark ice asteroids

  8. Conclusions: • Planet migration model explains diversity in the asteroid belt • Most D/P asteroids could be objects that formed in the outer solar system. • Changes our understanding of solar system formation. Moves the location of the “frost line” further out.
