  2. Born on June 22, 1949 in New Rochelle, New York • Child of Norman and Judith Menken • he learned to play the piano, violin and guitar. • Graduated from New York University with music degree in 1971

  3. Performed in clubs as a composer and musician • He hoped he would become “a singer-songwriter in the Peter Allen / Billy Joel / Elton John / James Taylor / Jackson Browne mode“ • Married his wife Janis in 1972 • They have two daughters, Anna and Nora. • Resides in Upstate New York

  4. Met Howard Ashman while attending musical-theater workshops • Together wrote stage play God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater in 1979. • That stage play wasn’t much of a success • In 1982, they made a musical based off the comedy-horror film, Little Shop of Horrors

  5. In 1987, the two began to work with Disney • 2 years later they finished working on Little Mermaid • In 1990, Menken won an Oscar for Under the Sea • Menken signed a contract with Disney Studios in 1991

  6. Howard Ashman was diagnosed as HIV positive while they were making music for Beauty and the Beast in 1991 • In 1998, Alan was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame • Ashman later passed away in 2001 • Received a star in Hollywood on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.

Beauty and the Beast was the first of Menken’s work to ever make it onto Broadway • He went on to compose music for Newsies (1992), Aladdin (1992), Pocahontas(1995), the Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) , Hercules (1997), Home on the Range (2004), the Shaggy Dog (2006), Enchanted( 2007) ,Tangled (2010),Mirror Mirror (2012).
